The purpose of Political Economy Analysis of Forestry Sector is to provide the project with a deeper understanding of the political economy context of forest governance, logging operations and procedures, supply chain operations, and competition and trade issues that may interfere with the sustainable management of the forestry sector and/or fair access to resources by SMEs in this sector.

Implementation period: October 2019 - February 2020

The economic development agency PPV is responsible for the project implementation, with a team of seven experts involved.

The focus areas of the PEA include:

  • Forestry Stakeholders, Relationships and Conflict of Interests
  • Public Policy, Governance, and Regulation
  • Allegations and Evidence of Abuse of Forestry Resources, Illegal and Unfair Trade
  • Control & Enforcement, Certification, Use of Technology
  • Trade
  • Furniture and Wood Processing Industry
  • Role of Education

In keeping with the indicated purpose of the PEA, the analysis is expected to identify and evaluate potential approaches for the US funded project to assist in increasing competitiveness, sales, and investment in the forestry sector. The PEA will provide an overview of the issues and identify main factors contributing to or hindering business engagement with government bodies given the current political economy dynamics, particularly in the context of the ongoing reform process.
